Domize offers fast, powerful, find-as-you-type domain name search

domize

Coming up with a good domain name these days is akin to finding a parking spot in New-York. Accordingly, tools for finding free domain names abound, and most of them offer some sort of a "brainstorming interface". The idea is to help you come up with a domain name nobody (including yourself) considered before.

Domize is one of the nicer attempts at this sort of thing. At its simplest form, it's a very fast find-as-you-type service for free domain names. As you type each new letter in the name of your domain, Domize quickly checks whether or not that domain name is free for .com, .net, .org, .co, .us and .biz.

But as I said, that's just scratching the surface of what Domize can do. Click Options and you can change the TLDs (top-level-domains, such as .at, .me and others), toggle the find-as-you-type functionality, and change the domain registrar used.

Once you're done tweaking the options, click Advanced to find out what neat syntax directives Domize supports. It actually has its own expression language: You can type something such as [like:cool] to search for synonyms of the word "cool" (coolheaded.net is up for grabs, by the way).

When you finally find a domain you like, hovering over the TLD shows a pop-up with price quotes from several different registrars, usually with significant differences in price. This is a beautiful tool.

The Feed: design takes the lead in this Google Reader iPad app

The Feed
When you look at some apps it's pretty clear that the design of the user experience was left a little late in the development cycle. It's common practice to employ a designer to finish off what the developer has already put in place, polishing the pixels if you will. That's certainly not the case with The Feed, as its claim to fame is that it's been made purely by a design firm, Ocean Observations, from the get go -- but does it show?

Opera Mobile 10.1 for Symbian is available and faster than ever

Opera Mobile 10.1 for SymbianOpera Mobile 10.1 for Symbian has become available yesterday. After a period of public beta testing, the Norwegian browser has become faster than ever -- and is, right now, possibly the fastest browser available for Symbian.

Making its debut in the stable 10.1 version is a just-in-time compiler for Opera's Carakan JavaScript engine, that makes its JavaScript rendering a whopping nine times faster than Opera 10.0.

Also new in this version is support for geolocation. This enables web services such as online maps and travel sites (and Google search) to recognize your location and adjust their content accordingly. Of course, you choose if and when to make your location available to third parties.

Other features that made it to the final 10.1 (that have also been available either in the beta or previous versions of Opera for Symbian) include tabbed browsing, a password manager, Opera Link (Opera's bookmark sync service), Speed Dial (which enables pinning of websites to the home page to make access to them only one tap away), support for kinetic scrolling, Opera's own virtual QWERTY keyboard and auto-rotation support.

As always, Opera Turbo is also included. With this feature turned on, Opera shrinks web pages to as little as 20% of their original size, using an Opera proxy server to re-render the content before sending it to your device.

You can download Opera Mobile 10.1 for Symbian by going to m.opera.com on your phone's integrated browser.

Microsoft Says Kinect Left Open By Design

kai_hiwatari writes "Around two week ago when Adafruit announced a bounty for developing an open-source driver for the Kinect, Microsoft made it clear that they didn't condone it. Now Microsoft seems to have realized the potential of their device and has made a U-turn. Alex Kipman, Xbox Director of Incubation, now says that they left the Kinect open by design. Kipman said, 'What has happened is someone wrote an open-source driver for PCs that essentially opens the USB connection, which we didn't protect, by design, and reads the inputs from the sensor.'"
