Milestone Conviction for Romanian BitTorrent Site Operator

The owner of a Romanian BitTorrent tracker serves as a milestone: He is the first person in the country to be sentenced for file-sharing activities. The BitTorrent tracker, Kartel.ro, was shut down in 2007 after the Business Software Alliance complained vigorously about its activities. The unnamed owner of the site was given a mild sentence: a 6 month suspended sentence and an unspecified fine. In addition to a six-month suspended sentence and fine, the site owner must pay rights holders. The payout on that is estimated to be no more than 10,000 euros.

"Providing the public with works protected by copyright is a crime. Software piracy is a scourge that affects the state as much as the rights holders," said Monica Pop, Chief Prosecutor from the government’s Intellectual Property Department. Read More
