Apple to Open Mac App Store in January

Apple plans to bring its App store to Mac computers on January 6. The App store will be available in 90 countries at launch and a free download for Mac OS X Snow Leopard users. Mac developers will set the price of their products and get to keep 70 percent of the revenue. Free apps cost nothing to distribute via the store.

The Mac App Store will look a lot like the app store for iOS mobile devices. One of the concerns among developers is that the store will feature the strict review approval process of the iOS app store. Consumers are concerned that Apple will make it so that the only way to buy Mac software will be through its new store, though there's no proof that that is the case.

"The App Store revolutionized mobile apps," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "We hope to do the same for PC apps with the Mac App Store by making finding and buying PC apps easy and fun." Read More
