Microsoft issues 17 security updates, fixing 40 vulnerabilities in Windows and IE

Microsoft Windows patchMicrosoft just broke its record for most security updates in one day by releasing 17 patches that fix 40 different vulnerabilities in the WIndows operating system and Internet Explorer browser. Two of the updates were marked critical, MS10-090 and MS10-091.

MS10-090 is an Internet Explorer fix that patches seven bugs in versions of the browser up to IE8. IE9 doesn't include any of these vulnerabilities, according to Microsoft. At least one of the bugs has been actively exploited by hackers since November, according to ComputerWorld. MS10-091 is a Windows update that fixes critical vulnerabilities in OpenType fonts. In the other patches, MS also fixed bugs having to do with images in Office apps and removed the last avenue of attack for the Stuxnet worm that went around earlier this year.

The bottom line: Windows users should install all of these updates, or at least make sure to get the two critical ones.
